Waymo and Other Driverless Taxis Move Into a New Era
You would be forgiven for thinking that Waymo, Alphabet Inc.’s autonomous driving unit, had a rough 2025. In October, one of the company’s robotaxis ran over a beloved bodega cat in San Francisco, generating national headlines. A few weeks later, another car hit an unleashed dog. Then, the weekend before Christmas, the power went out in parts of San Francisco and knocked out traffic lights, creating a Waymopocalypse of confused robot cars blocking intersections and snarling traffic, causing the company to temporarily suspend service.
